South Korea on Thursday raised its foot-and-mouth disease alert status to the highest level for the first time in seven years as a second strain of the disease was confirmed at a dairy farm in Yeoncheon County, Gyeonggi Province, the nation’s most populous province southeast of Seoul.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (MAFRA), the virus on the Yeoncheon farm, about 50 miles north of Seoul, was type A whereas the three other farms in Boeun County - about 106 miles southeast of Seoul - in North Chungcheong Province, and Jeongeup County - about 150 miles south of Seoul - in North Jeolla Province were type O.

The last became the fourth affected farm since the first infection was confirmed on Sunday that led to nationwide wide migration ban on livestock and farm vehicles.

This is the first time in which two different strains of foot-and-mouth disease have broken out simultaneously in Korea.

The last time the highest alert on foot-and-mouth disease was raised was in 2010-2011 when the country had to cull and bury 3.48 million cattle and pigs.

Under the highest alert, all of 86 markets trading cloven-hoofed animals nationwide will be closed from Thursday to Feb. 18. Foot-and-mouth-disease, which does not affect humans, is often fatal for cloven-hoofed animals such as cows and hogs.

The latest veterinary outbreak comes at a time when authorities are still combating the worst-ever spread of avian influenza that wrecked havoc on the poultry business. It would aggravate consumer sentiment and livestock and dining industry amid soaring prices from tight supplies.
