South Korea’s top mobile carrier SK Telecom Co. deployed Long Term Evolution (LTE)-based next-generation mobile telecommunication system exclusively for train system called LTE-R on Busan Subway Line 1 jointly with Busan Transportation Corp. to ensure underground safety and connectivity.

It is the first LTE-based railway communication system in the world, the company said Thursday. The subway would run on the upgraded platform in April after test trial run for two months.

Unlike analogue communications network that only support voice calls and radio contact, LTE-R enables real-time video sharing and group calling and texting. In case of a train accident, it would allow the control room, related organizations and commuting trains to share information on the emergency situation in group real-time video connection and take quick actions.

SK Telecom has been working on the replacement of the analogue network on Busan Subway Line 1 that has 40 stations on a 40.48-kilometer (25.15 mile)-long railway with LTE-R since it signed a contract to set up the system with Busan Transportation in August 2015.

The company will expand the business of replacing analogue railway communication network with LTE-R.
