Mercedes-Benz commands 41% of Jan Korean import car sales

Sales of imported car brands rose in Korea for the first time in three months in January with Mercedes-Benz leading the way with a monthly record shipment of over 6,800 units.

According to Korea Automobile Importers and Distribution Association (KAIDA) Monday, Mercedez Benz Korea Ltd. sold 6,848 cars here in January, up 59.3 percent from 4,298 units sold a year earlier to take up 41 percent of total foreign cars sold in Korea last month.

The Mercedez-Benz performance bumped up overall sales of import cars in January by 2.7 percent to 16,674 units from 16,234 cars shipped in the same month last year. Sales of foreign cars briefly rose against the year-ago period in October after five-month losing streak and then fell from November. Compared with 20,117 newly registered cars in December, the figure is down 17.1 percent.

Mercedes-Benz sold the lion’s share - 6,848 units, followed by BMW’s 2,415 units, Ford’s 1,023 units, Toyota’s 895 units, Lexus’ 724 units, Honda’s 684 units, Land Rover’s 595 units, and 541 units of MINI.

Mercedes-Benz’s flagship sedan E-Class models dominated the top five sellers - Mercedes-Benz E 220 d (1,263 units) Mercedes-Benz E 200 (1,048 units) Mercedes-Benz E 300 (780 units), Mercedes-Benz E 300 4MATIC (626 units) and Mercedes-Benz C200 (582 units).
