Foreign investors’ stock holding in Korea hit record high, exceeding 500 tr won

Foreign ownership in Korean stocks exceeded 500 trillion won ($439 billion) for the first time last month on improving U.S. economy and robust performance of bellwether Samsung Electronics Co.

According to the Financial Supervisory Service on Monday, overseas investors held 501.96 trillion won in local stocks as of the end of January this year, accounting for 32 percent of the total market capitalization. Their holding was up from 28.1 percent of market cap or 403.95 trillion won as of end-January in 2016.

Foreign investors have kept up their buying spree in the local bourse since the latter half of last year except for November. They net bought 1.74 trillion won in local shares in December 2016 and 1.79 trillion won in January.

Americans net purchased 1.4 trillion won worth local stocks last month. The net buying by Asian investors reached around 400 billion won and that by Europeans and Middle Easterners amounted 300 billion won and 200 billion won, respectively.

The amount of local shares held by American investors amounted to 206.5 trillion won as of end-January, making up 41.1 percent of the total stock holding by foreigners. It was followed by Europeans with 142.3 trillion won, Asians with 64.1 trillion won and the Middle Eastern nationals with 25.1 trillion won.
