South Korea’s state-run Korea Electric Power Corp. (KEPCO) said Thursday it developed a grid capable of charging up to 18 electric cars at the same time that could be both time- and space-saving.

The system allows a single grid distributing power across a plurality of charge ports, which could save both the charging station space and cost and help proliferation of charging infrastructure, it said.

The charging and discharging system also features KEPCO’s Vehicle to Grid (V2G) technology that enables returning electricity stored in electric vehicles to the power grid at the peak demand times.

KEPCO’s V2G technology was registered as a technical standard at Korea Smart Grid Association in December last year. It applied for the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC)’s international standards IEC 15118. If selected, the company’s V2G technology could become a standard in EV power.

The company installed the system at Korea Electric Power Research Institute in Daejeon. After conducting a test for six months, it will distribute the system to apartment complexes, public parking lots and shopping malls.

Shares of KEPCO closed Thursday at 42,100 won, down 0.82 percent or 350 won from the previous session.
