South Korea’s Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction Co. has newly established power plant repair maintenance service business, eying the global plant service market estimated to value over $500 billion.

Its services will range from redesign, repair and maintenance to fuel changes, an area with bigger and stable growth potential than power plant constructions, according to the company.

It estimates it can pull in services fees of at least 100 billion won ($87 million) a year from a 1-gigawatt power plant. Global capacity from generators across the world is at 6,500 gigawatts.

Tougher regulations according to climate and environmental commitments will likely demand generators to make design and fuel changes, it said.

The company appointed vice president Mok Jin-won to spearhead the Service Business Group and shifted service related organization and staffs from other units such as sales, planning, and business management to the new division.

It also incorporated its offshore subsidiary Doosan Babcock under the new group for synergy effect. Doosan Babcock that was acquired by Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction in 2006 boasts more than 30 years of work experiences in the field of repair and maintenance services for power plants in the Great Britain.

It plans to expand the power plant service business to offer power plant related utilities management and software development services on top of conventional power plant operation, repair and maintenance services.

“We will grow the business to provide a comprehensive power plant service solution,” said Mok.
