Chevrolet Volt, a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle made by General Motors Co., officially hit the Korean market Tuesday.
The EV model has been available to car-sharing business clients only.
Equipped with both electric motor and internal combustion engines, the second-generation Chevy Volt can travel up to 55 miles on electricity and up to 420 miles by turning on its 1.5-liter gasoline engine.
It also runs on a total of 192 high-voltage lithium-ion battery cells, removing 96 battery cells from its previous generation model to reduce battery weight by 10 kilograms. Its power efficiency is 12 percent improved from the previous version, stretching total driving range on the electric power alone by 30 percent, according to the company.
GM’s new plug-in hybrid electric vehicle, the mid-sized sedan with five seats, also offers additional safety features including 10 airbags, low-speed automatic braking system, and blind-monitor system.
The new Chevy Volt is available at 38 million won ($32,957.50) in Korea, but consumers can own it at 31.57 million won with 5 million won worth of local subsidy and tax benefits for purchasing environment-friendly vehicle.
