South Korea’s chipmakers Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix Inc. together responsible for 74 percent of the global memory chip supplies have a solid growth outlook for the first quarter as prices of dynamic random access memory (DRAM) chips gained in record pace of 38.66 percent in recent month.

According to market researcher DRAMeXchange on Tuesday, the contract prices of 4-gigabit (Gb) PC DRAM DDR3 modules, a benchmark for global DRAM price, averaged at $2.69 on January 25, up 38.66 percent from December 30, 2016. It is the highest-ever monthly rise since the market researcher started compiling such data in July 2012. The price of the 4Gb PC DRAM DDR3 chip that recorded $2.69 on June 30, 2015 dipped to $1.25 on May 31, 2016 but has since been on upward spiral.

Tight supply has continued to drive the price strengthening, further added by seasonal demand by PC makers. Demand for high-performance memory chips from smartphone makers is expected keep up the strengthening trend throughout the year. The research institute forecasts memory capacity per smartphone device to rise by more than 30 percent this year.

Samsung Electronics in the fourth quarter last year earned record-high operating profit of 4.95 trillion won ($4.2 billion) from semiconductor operation and SK Hynix reaped 1.54 trillion won profit, up 55.3 percent from a year-ago period.

Shares of Samsung Electronics closed Tuesday at 1,973,000 down 1.1 percent, and SK Hynix closed at 53,700 won, up 0.75 percent in Seoul trading.
