Stay-at-home dads have increased 24 percent over the last two years in Korea as changes in perspective as well as demographic and financial challenges spurred modern family and social culture to break out its traditional patriarchal norms and practices.

According to the data released by Statistics Korea on Tuesday, the number of stay-at-home dads among economically inactive population stood at 161,000 in 2016, the highest since 2010.

The statistical office counted 15,400 male homemakers, of which 7,000 took care of children as well as running household.

The number of stay-at-home fathers in Korea had peaked at 161,000 in 2010 and started to decline to 147,000 in 2011 and 2012, 14,400 in 2013 and 130,000 in 2014. The figure gained 24 percent over the past two years to reach 150,000 in 2015 and 161,000 in 2016.

The growth was driven by the increasing number of men who are responsible for running a household, up from 124,000 in 2014 to 142,000 in 2015 and 154,000 in 2016. On the other hand, the number of fathers who are the primary caregiver for their preschool children slightly decreased to 7,000 last year after rising from 6,000 in 2014 to 8,000 in 2015.

The change in gender roles and increased number of women entries to high-paying jobs fueled the growth in recent years, the office said.
