Samsung Electronics Co. was dethroned by archrival Apple Inc. in the global smartphone market in the fourth quarter as it grappled with the worst tech recall crisis over its newest invention Galaxy Note7 which eventually had to exit from the market over safety risk.

According to U.S. market research firm Strategy Analytics, Samsung Electronics shipped 77.5 million units in smartphones during the October to December period last year, down 5 percent compared to the same period of the previous year. Apple’s shipment amounted to 78.3 million units over the cited period as its latest iPhone 7 was further helped by absence of rivaling Samsung premium phone. In the fourth quarter, Samsung phones took up 17.7 percent of global market, the lowest in six years and losing out to Apple’s 17.8 percent.

The top rank was reversed for the first time in five years. In the third quarter, Samsung Electronics kept up a comfortable lead with 20.1 percent share against Apple’s 12.1 percent.

The market analysis firm said Samsung Electronics fared well in North and Latin America while struggling in Eastern and Western Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and Asia-Pacific regions.

The Chinese group - Huawei, Oppo and Vivo - capitalized on Samsung Electronics’ debacle over Galaxy Note7 to make fast advance during the quarter, it said.

Shares of Samsung Electronics closed Wednesday at 1,956,000 won, down 0.86 percent or 17,000 won from the previous session.
