The South Korean government will ease greenhouse emissions cap on 602 companies bind to emission regulations as a part of national and international commitments to climate control.

According to the changes approved in a cabinet meeting on Tuesday, the companies under the emissions and trading cap will be allowed to emit a combined 68,407,000 tons in addition to their annual limit this year. The higher cap will save that much of cost for big emitters as they have to buy excess emission rights from the emissions market.

Under the country’s greenhouse emissions trading system (ETS) act that has taken effect since January 2015, companies with an annual greenhouse emission track record of 125,000 tons or more for the past three years and manufacturing facility with emission capacity of more than 25,000 tons are given individual allowance units and must buy extra rights from the ETS exchange if they surpass their quota. Under the cap-and-trade scheme, companies falling below their allowance can sell the difference in the form of credits as a part of the government program to meet its pledge of reducing carbon emissions by 37 percent from current levels by 2030.
