South Korea’s SK Engineering & Construction Co. (SK E&C) and Daelim Industrial Co. won a 3.5 trillion won ($3 billion) worth order to build a bridge in Turkey.

According to media reports in Turkey on January 26, a Turkish and South Korean consortium including Korea’s SK E&C and Daelim Industrial and Turkey’s Limak andYapi Merkezi was selected as a preferred bidder for a project to construct a Canakkale suspension bridge. SK and Daelim expect they would sign a final contract as early as next month.

The so-called 1915 Canakkale Suspension Bridge will be the world’s longest bridge connecting Lapseki to Gelibolu districts of Canakkale.

According to an announcement of the Turkish government, a total of 24 companies around the world participated in the bid. SK and Daelim won the bid for the build, operate, transfer (BOT) project by offering 3.5 trillion won after beating strong contenders from Japan including Itochu and IHI backed by the Japanese government.

The construction will begin in March with an aim to start operation by 2023. SK and Daelim will be in charge of operation and maintenance of the bridge for 16 years and 2 months after construction.
