LG Chem`s carbon nanotube plant

LG Chem`s carbon nanotube plant

South Korea’s leading chemical company LG Chem Ltd. Tuesday began mass-production of carbon nanotubes from its new factory in Yeosu, South Jeolla Province devoted to the novel property increasingly sought in electronics, optics, and other fields of materials science.

The facility with an annual capacity of producing 400 tons of carbon nanotube is the world’s fourth largest, following China’s SUSN Sinotech New Materials with a 600-ton capacity, America’s Cnano Technology with a 500-ton capacity and Japan’s Showa Denko with a 500-ton capacity, according to the company.

LG Chem will start supplying the material for batteries and gradually increase the supply volume to fully operate the plant by the end of next year. It is also mulling adding a new facility in 2019 to meet growing demand.

Carbon nanotubes have unlimited applications from semiconductors, batteries, auto parts to aircraft. They have electrical conductivity similar to copper as well as very high thermal conductivity comparable to diamond. Moreover, they are 100 times stronger than steel.

The demand for carbon nanotubes is rising rapidly with the rapid advance in IT industry and electric vehicle market. The material is also used as conductive agent for lithium-ion batteries.

LG Chem provides various types of carbon nanotubes such as powder, liquid and compressed one to expand customer choices.

Shares of LG Chem closed Tuesday at 262,000 won, down 2.96 percent or 8,000 won from the previous session.
