“Pokemon Go” - headline-making augmented reality (AR) mobile game - made a belated splash in Korea, drawing over 7 million downloads in the first six days of its arrival that had been delayed by a half year from its global release due to security complexity in the country.

App analytics firm WiseApp Inc. said Monday 7.57 million people downloaded Pokemon Go app through Google Play Store from Jan. 24 to 29, and 6.98 million among them have been engaged with the AR mobile game, citing its sample survey on 23,000 users of Android-based smartphones. The count would be higher when including downloads from Apple Inc.’s App Store.

Pokemon Go is an AR mobile game developed by Niantic Inc. and invested by Nintendo Co. featuring cutesy characters from Japanese cartoon “Pocket Monsters” relying on Google Maps to work. The game became an instant sensation across the globe, building flocks of people in the parks and many other public places hunting for monsters to train after it was launched in the U.S. and elsewhere last July.

The game’s landing in Korea was delayed due to security concerns in the war-dived region. Many had been skeptical of the game whose initial fad has been waning. But its release was well timed with the Lunar New Year’s long holiday.

The game drew millions of players daily during the holiday period.
