The South Korean government has ordered Hyundai Motor Co., Kia Motors Inc., and Renault Samsung Motors Co. to recall their diesel models with gas emissions that exceed legal limits. The violation was found during recent routine tests.

The Ministry of Environment announced on Tuesday it ordered the recall of Hyundai’s Tucson 2.0, Kia’s Sportage 2.0 and Renault Samsung’s QM3.

Test results showed the Sportage 2.0 Diesel exceeded legal limits in one item of particulate matters, the Tucson2.0 Diesel in four items of particulate matters, number of particulate matters, oxides of nitrogen and hydrocarbon/ oxides of nitrogen, and the QM3 in two items of oxides of nitrogen and hydrocarbon/ oxides of nitrogen.

The order is applied on 126,000 units of the Sportage 2.0 produced between August 2010 and August 2013, 80,000 units of the Tucson 2.0 produced between June 2013 and August 2015 and 41,000 units of the QM3 produced between December 2013 and August 2015.

The carmakers should report to the ministry detailed recall plans that include an analysis of the defects and how to fix them within 45 days. Upon the ministry’s approval of the recall plan, the carmakers will notify car owners individually and provide them with free repair services.

The carmakers suspect that aging or defects in a diesel particulate filter and an exhaust gas recirculation system had caused the problems.
