South Korea’s leading cosmetics company Amorepacific Corp. teamed up with unlikely partner SK Telecom, the country’s leading wireless carrier, for development in new beauty products and services based on the Internet of Things (IoT) and big data.

The beauty product company said Monday that it signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the telecommunications company to use IoT services and big data that will be provided through a dedicated network that SK Telecom will set up for Ameropacific in developing new beauty products and services.

Under the term, SK Telecom will set up the IoT network that will connect factories and outlets of Amorepacific nationwide. Through the dedicated network, the cosmetics manufacturer will gather big data about skin types and preferences of individual customers who visit its shops and transmit such accumulated customer information to its factories and laboratories to analyze and develop new products and services.

The company is expected to develop new beauty products that can be specially tailored to the needs of individual customers and beauty services incorporating IoT services. It already uses mirroring technology that allows customers at shops to test various beauty products on their pictures in small devices such as a tablet PC without putting makeup on their face.

SK Telecom already completed the deployment of the Low-Power Wide-Area Network (LPWAN) based on LoRa technology - LoRa WAN - across the nation last July. LPWAN is a type of telecommunications network designed to support Internet of Small Things (IoST) - which refers to the connectivity of small objects that measure and process low-volume data such as temperature, humidity, weight, and location.
