LG Electronics Inc.’s upcoming flagship smartphone G6 will feature Google Inc.’s artificial intelligence (AI)-powered voice assistant service ‘Google Assistant’, becoming the first Korean-made smartphone to sport the voice assistant system first unveiled by Google in May last year.

According to industry sources Thursday, LG Electronics agreed with the U.S. tech giant last year to adopt the voice assistant service in its new smartphone G6. LG Electronics is said to have been working to optimize the G6’s software to employ the voice assistance service so it can showcase the G6 with the service at the Mobile World Congress show to be held in February.

Google Assistant is an AI-powered voice assistant service that enables its user to make calls, play music, check weather information and search webs with simple voice commands even when the screen power is off. Powered by machine learning functions, the service will suggest the best options for restaurants and menus after considering users’ favorite locations and menus when the user searches for dining out places.

This new voice assistance service is expected to allow LG Electronics that has been lagging behind its competitors in the smartphone market to gain ground. Amid intensifying competition, Apple Inc. is also accelerating its efforts to enhance its AI voice recognition program, Siri, in the iPhone series, and Samsung is preparing to employ its own smart assistant for the next Galaxy S8, called Bixby.

LG has been maintaining its close cooperation with Google since last year when it adopted the Android 7.0 Nougat operating system to its new premium smartphone LG V20.
