Mercedes-Benz to launch connected car svc with KT, expand business in Korea

Mercedes-Benz Korea will partner with the country’s mobile carrier KT Corp. to develop a connected car service package as part of efforts to cement its number one position in the Korean import car market, according to Dimistris Psillakis, chief executive officer of the local unit of German automaker Mercedes-Benz.

During a press conference held at Hotel Shilla in Seoul on Monday, the carmaker said that it would release six new models this year including a new GLA model from its compact car segment, new GLC Coupe and new lineups of its high-performance brand Mercedes-AMG. The new lineup will also include plug-in hybrid vehicle, it added.

Mercedes-Benz Korea was named the leading import car brand in Korea last year for the first time in 11 years by selling 56,343 units, up 19.9 percent from the previous year. Korea became the 8th largest market for the German automaker. Psillakis said that the company would work hard to achieve its sales target of 60,000 units this year.

Psillakis also added that the automaker plans to expand sales and service networks by investing 200 billion won ($168 million) this year. It will increase the number of showrooms from 42 to 50 and service centers from 48 to 55. It will also add nine more showrooms for certified pre-owned vehicles from 11 it is currently operating.

The carmaker also plans to hire 1,000 new dealership network employees and contribute 4 billion won additionally for corporate social responsibility fund this year.
