Spooked by the overheating defect that led to the discontinuation of its local rival Samsung Electronics’ latest premium phone, South Korea’s LG Electronics Inc. is highlighting enhanced safety feature in its new flagship smartphone G6 to be unveiled at the Mobile World Congress held in Barcelona, Spain in February.

The Korean tech giant on Sunday said its upcoming G6 is embedded with copper heat pipes ensuring high thermal conductivity and diffusion that are usually used in notebooks and PCs for cooling.

The enhanced safety against overheating comes after Samsung Electronics Co. had to recall and withdraw Galaxy Note 7due to battery explosion problem.

“Heat pipes disperse internal heat and lowers heat from overworking application processor by 6 to 10 percent,” said an official from the company.

For multiple protections, the company has designed the phone to give enough space between components, a factor industry experts suspect to have been partly blamed for overheating in the Note 7 phone featuring various cutting-edge technologies apart from battery.

It has toughened safety tests, experimenting with the phone in various harsh conditions and environment. For instance, the phone was tested after being dropped in extremely high humidity and temperature. The battery also underwent safety tests stronger than international standards.

“We have conducted battery heat exposure tests at temperatures as high as 150 degrees Celsius, higher than the U.S. and Europe’s standard of 130 degrees,” the company added. The battery was pierced with a sharp nail and hit with a heavy object from different heights, according to the company.
