The new high-speed multiple unit (HEMU) bullet trains in Korea will be tech-rich with each seat fitted with mobile phone charger and compartment ceiling with high-definition displays, its maker Hyundai Rotem Co. said.

The locomotive and rolling stock unit of Hyundai Motor Group is under 268.8 billion won ($229.1 million) contract with state railway operator Korea Railroad Corp. (Korail) to deliver a fleet of 84 HEMU trains with a maximum speed of 260 kilometers per hour and another 59 billion won arrangement to supply 16 HEMU trains that can run at a speed of 320 kilometers per hour by December 2020.

A Hyundai Rotem official said that these high-speed trains will sport diverse cutting-edge facilities for passenger convenience. All regular seats will be fitted with wireless smartphone chargers, while passage ceiling will feature an HD monitor. For first-class seats, every seat will be fitted with a separate monitor on the back.

The HEMU trains with electric traction on each carriage have emerged as a popular suburban commuting rail network due to their fast speed and pollution-free operation. The Korean company which entirely ran high-speed locomotives with electric traction located at each end upon importing French-made TGV technology has been trying to build credential in the EMU segment as it makes up 75 percent of lately made high-speed trains.
