South Korea’s leading online portal operator Naver Corp. will become the first Korean Information and Communication Technology (ICT) company to put a car run by its self-driving car technologies on the roads for test driving as early as this month, joining Hyundai Motor Co., Kia Motors Corp. and Seoul National University that have been testing more than 10 driverless cars across the country.

The company said on Friday that it is waiting for “the temporary operation permit” from the government after passing a performance test recently. According to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, the permit would be issued as soon as Naver’s research and development subsidiary Naver Labs’ corporation registration process is completed. In Korea, anyone who wants to test self-driving car technology must obtain approval from the ministry first.

The autonomous vehicle that the web portal giant has developed has the same automation capability with Level 3 vehicles based on the standards of the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. There are six levels ranging from 0 to 5 regarding driving automation, with Level 3 meaning conditional automation with near self-driving capability backed by sensors and cameras. Level 4 and higher is regarded as full automation.

“The test driving would help us improve automation performance based on artificial intelligence,” said an official from Naver, adding that the company is planning to install its speech recognition AI system AMICA in the car to enable voice commands.
