China bans imports of Korean cosmetics amid THAAD tensions

Chinese authorities have recently refused to approve imports of 11 tons of Korean cosmetics products, a move suspected to be part of the country’s retaliation against Korea’s decision to allow the deployment of a U.S. Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) battery here.

According to industry sources on Tuesday, Beijing announced on Jan. 3 that 28 cosmetics products failed to win approval for import in November last year, and among them 19 were Korean. The 11 tons of products were all sent back to Korea.

The affected Korean cosmetics included creams, essences, cleansers, mask packs, toothpastes and body washes that have been popular in China. IASO’s lotion set, mask packs, essences, scrubs, creams, make-up bases, cleansers and sunblock lotions failed to enter China for not having certificates proving they could be used before expiration date. Kocostar’s rose mask packs were disqualified because the products were different from the filed import list. Dham:a and Rice Day’s shampoos failed to gain approval due to a high content of dioxane exceeding the permit limits, and Aekyung’s body washes were disqualified because product components changed.

“It is concerned that too many disqualified products were Korean products,” said a source from the cosmetics industry.
