Samsung SDI unveiled a high energy density battery powering electric vehicles (EV) to run 500 kilometers (311 miles), a distance to reach Busan from Seoul, on just 20-minute charge.

It released the superfast charging powerful EV battery cell at the 2017 North American International Auto Show, at Cobo Center in Detroit.

The battery which used materials with reduced internal resistance and process technology enables EVs to drive up to 500 kilometers on 80 percent charge for 20 minutes and 600 kilometers on full charge. The commercial production of this high energy density battery cell is expected to start in 2021.

Samsung SDI also showcased expandable module for a new EV battery module platform. Currently, a battery module for EVs is composed of 12 cells with 2 to 3kWh capacity, whereas the expandable module contains 24 cells with 6 to 8kWh capacity.

The company was able to enlarge the battery module while ensuring product safety, according to Samsung SDI.
