Import car sales in South Korea shrank 7.6 percent from a year ago in 2016 as punitive action on Audi and Volkswagen cars for certification and emission faults removed most of the German car brands off the streets of Korea.

According to the Korea Automobile Importers and Distributors Association (KAIDA) Thursday, a total of 225,729 foreign vehicles were newly registered in the country in 2016, down 7.6 percent from 243,900 units in the previous year.

Audi Volkswagen Korea, the Korean unit of German carmakers Volkswagen AG and Audi AG, saw its sales nosedive after the Korean government imposed a sales ban on many of its flagship vehicles for violating local certification and emission rules last year. Volkswagen sold 13,178 cars in 2016, down 63.2 percent on year. It failed to sell a single car in December. Sales of Audi vehicles tumbled 48.6 percent to 16,718.

By brand, Mercedes-Benz sold the most in 2016 - 56,343 units, boosted by its new flagship sedan E-class. BMW trailed with sales of 48,459 units, followed by Audi 16,718 units, Volkswagen 13,178 units, Ford 11,220 units, Land Rover 10,601 units, Lexus 10,594 units, Toyota 9,265 units, MINI 8,632, Honda 6,636, Chrysler 5,959, Nissan 5,733, Volvo 5,206 Jaguar 3,798 and Peugeot 3,622 units.

The top three best-selling import car models for the entire 2016 were BMW’s flagship sedan 520d which sold 7,910 units, followed by Mercedes-Benz E-300 6,169 units and Lexus ES300h 6,112 units.
