Amid heated competition over the solution for the best living-room picture quality, Han Sang-beom, vice chairman and chief executive officer of LG Display Co., thumbed his nose at local archrival Samsung Electronics’ latest flagship 4K TVs in quantum dot-based backlight.

Han questioned the difference in Samsung’s QLED series from past versions claiming the TVs are still a variant of liquid crystal display LCD TV whose flexibility cannot be compared to the organic light-emitting diodes (OLED) that do not require backlight as LCDs.

Samsung in fielding the new QLED series claim they are the next big thing in the TV scene with the best possible picture quality in any setting and angle, better color, contrast ratio, and power efficiency ratio than OLED.

"If QLED is self-emitting, it is comparable to our OLED. If not, there is no comparison,” Han said at CES 2017 press conference held at Las Vegas Convention Center on Wednesday (local time).

Because OLED is self-illuminating, the panel can be infinitely applicable, the OLED leader said. At the show, LG introduced OLED solutions embedded with touch sensor and sound system and displays in mirror-like glass and paper-thin wallpaper.
