Samsung Electronics claiming to have perfected the picture quality in TVs through quantum-dot technology will focus on upgrading TV function to play a central role in dictating smart lifestyles, said Kim Hyun-suk, chief executive of the Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics Co. at CES 2017 show in Las Vegas.
“People do not talk about picture quality, but complaints about inconveniences when talking about TVs,” he said.
Introducing newest 4K TV series backed by its proprietary quantum dots, Samsung Electronics dropped the brand name SUHD TV used for ultra high definition LCD TV to coin its flagship premium line as QLED TV. The QLED is not a brand but a type of TV technology, said Kim, adding that the company does not have any plan of monopolizing the trademark on QLED TV to invite others to employ quantum dots.
Samsung Electronics has been recruiting members on its quantum-dot side against the organic light-emitting diode (OLED) front led by its local archrival LG Electronics.
Samsung Electronics is yet to release the price on QLED TVs. Kim said the range should be acceptable to consumers.
