South Korea’s largest auto giant Hyundai Motor Co. and smaller sibling Kia Motors Corp. will target to sell largest-ever 8.25 million vehicles this year. Its 2017 goals exceed 8.13 million set for last year and 8.2 million for 2015.

The automaker has made aggressive sales target despite “heightened uncertainties from slow recovery in the global economy and fiercer competition among automakers,” said Hyundai Motor Group Chairman Chung Mong-koo in his New Year’s address to employees.

The carmaker will up research and development to make headway in self-driving technology. Hyundai Motor Group has been working on self-driving car technology with an aim of commercializing fully autonomous cars. Hyundai Motor also plans to build a big data center in China to accelerate its development of connected car technology.

Hyundai and Kia plans to roll out more than 28 types of eco-friendly cars by 2020 in addition to new 10 model releases every year.

The group aims to expand its sport utility vehicle (SUV) lineup and shipment. It is readying to introduce G70, new sedan from its premium standalone Genesis brand, and upgraded version of the G80 in the U.S., to strengthen the Genesis brand.
