South Korea’s LG Electronics Inc. has challenged its local rival Samsung Electronics in the horserace over next-generation ultra high-definition 4K TV image quality by pitting a different type of nano cells against Samsung’s nanotechnology dubbed quantum dots to perfect fluorescence performance.

The third generation LG SUPER UHD TV lineup in three models SJ9500, SJ8500 and SJ800 was unveiled at the CES 2017 this week in Las Vegas. They feature even-sized nano particles to deliver highly nuanced and consistently accurate colors in every viewing angle to take LCD TV to a whole new level, the company said on Monday in a statement. LG so far has been fielding OLED in 4K lineup against Samsung’s quantum-dot UHD TVs.

Nano cell is an ultra-tiny mineral particle that is approximately one nanometer, or one billionth of a meter, in diameter. With these nano cells coated on the color filter, LG’s SUPER UHD TVs offers consistent colors at wider viewing angles with virtually no color difference seated directly in front of the screen and those watching from a 60 degree angle, according to the company.

Nano cell absorbs surplus light wavelength to prevent unwanted color bleeding or fading. LG’s nano cell technology also reduces on-screen light glow to maintain high picture quality even when the screen is surrounded by intense ambient lighting.

“Our 2017 SUPER UHD TV lineup with LG’s proprietary Nano Cell technology is a breakthrough in display technology that advances the LCD TV viewing experience to a level unlike any other,” said Brian Kwon, president of the LG Home Entertainment Company.

The new TVs also support high dynamic range (HDR) technology, including “Dolby Vision,” - the most popular and advanced HDR technology chosen by major Hollywood video producers and providers like Netflix Inc. - “HDR 10” and “Hybrid Log Gamma (HLG).” They are also fitted with webOS 3.5, the latest version of LG Electronics’ user interface.
