South Korean pharmaceutical conglomerate Dong-A Socio Group announced on Monday that Dong-A Socio Holdings vice chairman Kang Jung-seok took the chairman post as of Jan. 1, replacing his father 87-year-old Kang Shin-ho who led the country’s largest drugmaker for 35 years. The senior Kang was named as honorary chairman.

Jung-seok, 51, is the fourth son of honorary chairman Kang and the grandson of the group’s founder. After graduating from Chung-Ang University, he joined Dong-A Pharmaceutical Co. in 1989 and held key positions before taking on the role of CEO of Dong-A Socio Holdings in 2013. He was promoted to vice chairman of the holding company in 2015, raising the possibility that the junior Kang will inherit the helm of the pharmaceutical group.

Earlier, Dong-A Socio Group reorganized the senior executive level with younger generation in their late 40s and early 50s, preparing for the group’s power succession.

Han Jong-hyun born in 1968 was named to head Dong-A Socio Holdings and the president office of Dong-A ST was filled in by Dong-A Otsuka president Min Jang-sung, who was also born in 1968. Choi Ho-jin born in 1966, head of marketing team at Dong-A Pharm was promoted to the president of Dong-A Pharm.
