South Korean major auto part supplier Hyundai Wia topped the 1 trillion won ($750 million) mark in overseas orders for constant velocity joints (CV joints) for the first time.

On Wednesday, Hyundai Wia announced that it secured a total of 1.04 trillion won in CV joint orders from European and North American automotive manufacturers in 2023.

CV joints play a crucial role in transmitting power from the motor or engine to the wheels and are considered the epitome of mechanical engineering technology. Efficiently transmitting power from the motor or engine to the wheels with minimal loss and minimize vibrations and noise during operation requires a high level of technological expertise, according to industry experts.

Hyundai Wia has consistently invested developing more lightweight CV joints, as well as minimizing noise and vibrations, and developed high-efficiency, low-vibration CV joints specialized for electric vehicles. It separately developed large-sized CV joints to proactively meet diverse customer demands.

Hyundai Wia has also completed the development of the Integrated Drive Axle (IDA), an advanced system that combines the conventional CV joint with adjacent systems. The IDA integrates the drive shaft, responsible for transmitting power to the wheels, with the wheel bearing that connects it to the wheels. This innovation reduces component weight, increases strength, and significantly enhances the vehicle’s driving performance.

Hyundai Wia currently produces over 5 million CV joints annually via overseas subsidiaries in China, India, and Mexico, and plans to efficiently supply CV joints and provide ongoing technical support by actively using global production bases.
