Egg prices in South Korea reached a record high of 8,025 won ($6.63) per 30-egg carton on Wednesday due to worst-ever bird flu outbreak in the country, raising fear of unprecedented egg crisis ahead of the Lunar New Year Day holiday, the biggest family gathering for Koreans.

Millions of chickens and ducks in Korea have been culled in less than a month since the highly pathogenic aviation influenza virus strain was first reported on November 16 but the outbreak is yet to be contained due to slack response from the health authority with state leadership entirely distracted with political scandal involving the president.

According to state-run Korea Agro-Fisheries & Food Trade Corp. on Wednesday, the average retail price for 30 eggs jumped 47.5 percent to 8,025 won from a month-ago period. It is the first time that the price for 30 eggs exceeded 8,000-won level since 1996 when the state institution began compiling such data.

Both producer price and retail price have shot up. The producer price of 10 eggs that hovered around 1,000 won in late November hit 1,907 won on Tuesday and the retail price of 10 eggs jumped to 2,087 won from 1,200 ~ 1,300 won range during the same period, according to National Agricultural Cooperative Federation data.

Retail price at big-box store chains which usually offer cheaper shelf prices topped 7,000-won threshold. Homeplus, one of the nation’s major hypermarket chain, priced 30 eggs at 7,290 won, roughly up 20 percent this month alone.

Over 27 million poultry has been slaughtered so far, of which are 19.64 million egg-laying hens.

The industry fears egg supply shortage could ruin family meals during next month Lunar New Year Day holiday season.
