South Korea’s LG Electronics Inc. has incorporated webOS – the operating system technology it acquired from HP in February, 2013 – in its refrigerator, hinting that it would go head-to-head with its archrival Samsung Electronics Co. which earlier opted for Tizen in its own fridge, over dominance in the so-called “smart home” market.

According to the consumer-electronics industry Sunday, LG will unveil its smart fridge which runs webOS at CES 2017 to be held from Jan. 5 to 8 in Las Vegas.

This marks its first attempt to try out webOS on its kitchen appliances. The firm has rolled out TVs that run webOS, Linux kernel-based multitask operating system for smart devices like TVs and smartwatches, back in 2014.

For electronics firms, having their gadgets run their own OS has many plus factors. First, it makes development of smart home appliances much easier. Moreover, it allows them to collect usage patterns of customers, which would be a great help in developing next products. It also ushers in the Internet of Things (IoT) ecosystem that makes everyday device part of a connected home.
