South Korea’s Hyundai Rotem Co., locomotive and rolling stock unit of Hyundai Motor Group, said on Thursday that it won a 59 billion won ($49.4 million) order from state-owned Korea Railroad Corp. (Korail) to build high-speed electric multiple unit (HEMU) trains.
The HEMU train would be the fastest train in Korea with a maximum speed of 320 kilometers per hour in commercial operation and 352 kilometers per hour by design. It is comprised of two sets of eight carriages. The company plans to deliver the HEMU trains by March 2021.
It is the second high-speed train order that Hyundai Rotem obtained after it secured its first-ever HEMU order from Korail in June to deliver 30 HEMU trains, EMU-250`s. The previously ordered trains are scheduled to run at the Gyeongjeon Line`s new route connecting Busan and Masan, southern coastal cities of Korea, when the new route opens in 2020.
HEMU equipped with electric traction on each carriage has emerged as a popular commuter and suburban rail networks due to their fast acceleration and pollution-free operation. It is capable of accommodating more passengers than its rivals as it does not need a separate locomotive. The country’s current high-speed train, KTX (Korea Train eXpress), is a locomotive with electric traction located at each ends.
Separately, the company said it also secured another electric locomotive order worth 43.8 billion won from Korail, delivering 28 carriages that will run between a route connecting Busan and Ulsan, southeastern coastal cities. It is scheduled to deliver the carriages by February 2019.
