South Korea’s full-service carrier Asiana Airlines Inc. Friday introduced its sixth double-deck aircraft A380 at Incheon International Airport, Korea, completing its plan of adding six A380s over the last three years to bolster its competitiveness in over-haul flights, said the company.
Asiana Airlines’ sixth A380 with a capacity of carrying 495 passengers will be flying a route connecting Incheon, Korea and Frankfurt, Germany from March 2017. The A380 made by European plane maker Airbus is the world’s largest commercial aircraft.
The company this year devised a strategy to diversify its revenue source amid growing competition from budget carriers that are eating away the market for full-service carriers. It has put great efforts to restructure loss-incurring routes and expand high-profit routes with a strong focus on long-haul flights to stand far apart from low-cost carriers that have even advanced into medium-distance routes.
The airline increased the number of flights from Korea to Delhi, India to seven times a week from previous three times and the Korea-Rome, Italy flights to five times a week from previous three times. The company also replaced airplanes operating for the routes from Korea to New York and Los Angeles, U.S with 550-seat A380 from 400-seat B777 carrier in a move to enlarge revenues.
Moreover, the passenger carrier will be introducing three widebody aircraft A350s designed for medium to long-haul operations from next year and start launching 25 A321-NEO planes from 2019 until 2025 to boost its strength in medium-to-long distance air travel sector.
