SK Hynix Inc. said Thursday that it will construct a new chip plant in Cheongju, Chungbuk Province in Korea with investment of 2.2 trillion won ($1.84 billion) in order to meet escalating demand for non-volatile storage (NAND) flash. The investment is part of its mid- and long- term plan it announced last year during its M14 fab completion ceremony.

The world’s second largest memory chipmaker then said it would spend up to 46 trillion won in setting up three fabs including the M14.

The new fab will sit on 234,000 square meters in Cheongju Technopolis site. SK Hynix will start designing the plant next month and begin building the shell and the cleanroom in August next year with a goal of completion by June 2019. Equipment installation within the plant will be decided later, taking account of market conditions and the firm’s migration plans.

Demand for semiconductor memory chips is on a steady rise, fueled by big data and innovations in IT technology. In particular, demand for NAND flash is growing fast along with the rise of smartphone and solid-state drive (SSD) markets led by 3D NAND solutions.

On the supply side, more delicate and complex chip manufacturing requires advanced equipment and more floor spaces for processing, prompting manufacturers to add more lines.

The company’s 3D NAND flash will also be rolled out from the upper deck of the M14 plant in Icheon, Gyeonggi Province from next year.

The company plans to invest 950 billion won until April 2019 to expand the cleanroom at its Wuxi dynamic random access memory (DRAM) fab in China.

As of 1:23 p.m. Thursday, shares of SK Hynix traded at 45,400 won, up 0.89 percent, or 400 won, from the previous session.
