Samsung Electronics Co. will add Galaxy S8 Plus, a new smartphone model with a display size of larger than 6 inches, to its usual lineup of Galaxy S8 premium series for next year in hopes to restore its reputation as unrivalled maker of large-screen phablet category in the aftermath of the ill-fated Galaxy Note 7.

According to sources on Friday, Samsung Electronics recently sent orders to its suppliers to begin mass production of parts for the Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8 Plus from January. The new models are due to reach consumers in April next year.

Earlier, Samsung announced a plan to launch the Galaxy S8 with a display between 5 inches and 6 inches. Market watchers say Samsung’s addition of a bigger-screen smartphone aims to rekindle consumers’ lust for phablets as seen when the 5.7-inch Galaxy Note 7 sold like hot cakes before it was discontinued.

To date, the 5.7 inch display was the largest in Samsung flagship smartphone lineup. The additional model also suggests that Samsung wants to maintain distinctive edge versus archrival Apple’s iPhone in through big-screen features.

The addition of the Galaxy S8 Plus reflects the company’s confidence in its flexible OLED display. The display on the new models will stretch from edge to edge. To make room, Samsung will get rid of home buttons on the new models, opting instead for on-screen buttons. This will allow Samsung to expand the screen size while retaining a form factor that users can still fit in a pocket.

The Galaxy S8 models will be released in New York in April.
