South Korea`s low-cost carrier Eastar Jet Co. has launched its first interline flight through an international airline alliance U-Fly Alliance in a bid to tap into burgeoning demand for air travel across Southeast Asia and Greater China.

The budget carrier announced on Wednesday that it has started offering an interline flight from Incheon to Chiang Mai in Thailand, for the first time among the domestic budget carriers. It has launched the new route by connecting its Incheon to Hong Kong route with Hong Kong to Chiang Mai route operated by Hong Kong Express after five-months-long negotiations since it joined U-Fly Alliance in July, the world`s first alliance of low-cost carriers formed by Hong Kong Express, Lucky Air, Urumqi Air and West Air.

U-Fly Alliance offers 168 routes linking 85 cities across China, Thailand and Myanmar. With rising demand for travel in Greater China and its neighboring countries in Southeast Asia, the number of aircrafts owned by the alliance is expected to increase to 200 by 2020 from current 95.

Eastar Jet has become the first home-grown budget carrier to operate a flight established based on an interline agreement through the alliance, the company said. The Incheon to Chiang Mai route is also the first direct flight provided by a domestic low-cost carrier.

"We will expand our presence by reaching more interline agreements through U-Fly Alliance," said an unnamed official from Eastar Jet. "We will provide more various options to customers based on a strong global network," he added.
