Korean and other carmakers and technology companies have teamed up to create the largest-ever multinational consortium to perfect self-driving vehicle technology.

According to Hyundai Motor and Japanese newspaper Nihon Keizai Shimbun (Nikkei) on Monday, a group of 27 multinational enterprises from industries ranging from auto, IT to logistics has joined forces to develop self-driving vehicles and establish safety and other standards in autonomous driving. The companies formed a working level committee in May at the World Economic Forum and have been in discussions. The group is also scheduled to begin road tests of self-driving vehicles in the U.S. this month.

The consortium members include 12 automakers including Korea’s Hyundai Motor, Japan’s Nissan Motor Co., America’s General Motors Corp. as well as European auto giants Volkswagen and Volvo. International IT players - Qualcomm of the U.S and Sweden’s Ericsson are also taking parts to come up with technology standards for self-driving cars. America’s ride-sharing service Uber and logistics giant United Parcel Service Inc. have also joined the bandwagon to gain headway in the new age of self-driving cars.

Separately, the world’s leading electronics vehicle maker Tesla Motors Inc. teamed up with U.S auto tycoon Ford Motor Co. and tech giant Google Inc. in April and formed a consortium to work together and prepare for regulations in autonomous driving industry.
