Renault Samsung Motors Co., the South Korean unit of French carmaker Renault S.A., will be spearheading research and development of new sport utility vehicles (SUV) for Renault after the company earned confidence from its French parent company with its success in mid-sized SUV QM6.

According to the industry sources Sunday, the French parent auto group has recently decided to solely entrust its Korean unit with the group-wide SUV research and development. The decision follows the big splash with QM6 that sold as many as 10,536 units - 2,536 units in September, 4,141 units in October and 3,859 units in November - in the first three months since its launch in Korea.

The QM6 that was mainly developed by Renault Samsung Technical Center in Korea adopts the same body design with the company’s another hit product SM6 sedan and sports high-end specifications. Badged as Renault Koleos outside Korea, the SUVs are shipped to about 80 countries.

Renault Group has a total of five research and development (R&D) centers across the globe - in Korea, Rumania, India and Brazil. Among them, its technical center in Korea, located in Yongin, Giheung in Gyeonggi Province, is armed with a R&D workforce of more than 1,000, playing a crucial role in Renault Group’s Asia-Pacific operations. Except for the technical center in France, the Korean center is the only facility with full capacity to oversee from vehicle design to production. The QM6 developed by the Korean center is manufactured in Renault Samsung’s assembly plant in Busan, and the cars are shipped to home and overseas markets. The French maker also would find it’s safer to leave SUV to its Korean partner as SUV market is relatively small and fledgling in Europe.
