South Korea’s SK Hynix Inc. is mulling to team up with U.S. hard-disc drive maker Seagate Technology PLC. to bolster its presence in solid-state drive (SSD) whose demand is on the rise as the alternative to hard-disc drive.

According to the relevant industry sources Wednesday, SK Hynix, the world’s second largest memory chipmaker, seeks a 51:49 joint venture (JV) with Seagate Technology with it holding the bigger interest. SK Hynix on Wednesday said it was looking into various options to strengthen its mid and long-term competitiveness of nonvolatile storage (NAND) flash, but declined to confirm the talk of a joint venture. Seagate also has not disclosed any details.

SSD is memory storage built entirely out of non-volatile semiconductors and can transfer data at faster than traditional hard drives while consuming less energy. It offers higher reliability as its components do not involve any moving parts, making them optimal for mobile computers. SSD has not replaced hard drives due to its relative expensive cost. But as computers turn more high-performance, demand for higher and more reliable storage also surged. Industry watchers believe SSD powered by NAND flash chips would eventually replace hard drives.

SK Hynix commanding the second place in the memory market trails behind Samsung Electronics, Toshiba and Micron in NAND chips. Samsung Electronics maintains leadership in SSD.

Strategic partnership would be a win-win for both as Seagate would secure stable NAND chip supplies from SK Hynix while the Korean chipmaker would have access to storage solutions of the U.S. company. Samsung used to command the second largest stake in Seagate, but sold the shares earlier this year.
