Niro, South Korean automaker Kia Motors Corp.’s compact hybrid sport utility vehicle (SUV), has set a new Guinness World Record for crossing the United States from the west end to east in lowest use of fuel.

The carmaker announced on Friday that its Niro traveled 3,715.4 miles from Los Angeles City Hall to New York City Hall using just 48.5 gallons or 4.1 tanks of gas, setting a new world record in fuel mileage of 76.6 miles per gallon (mpg). The record beat its official combined fuel-economy rating of 49 mpg in the U.S. by 56.3 percent. The co-drivers were Wayne Gerdes, an American auto journalist, and Robert Winger, an expert in eco-friendly technology.

“We set out to build a vehicle that offers real-world utility, great looks, and fantastic mileage,” said Orth Hedrick, vice president and product planner of Kia Motors America.

The Korean carmaker plans to launch five models of Niro early next year in the U.S. market. The Niro LX and EX received an official combined fuel economy rating of 49 mpg in the country. The automaker also set a new Guinness World Record with its hybrid sedan K5 for achieving 64.55 mpg fuel mileage after traveling 7,899 miles through the 48 states in the U.S. in 2011.
