Samsung Electronics won’t be able to pin down the exact cause of combustion in battery-embedded Galaxy Note7 within the year, which could interrupt with release of the next Galaxy S series on which the world’s top smartphone maker’s reputation hinge following the disgraceful recall and discontinuation of the big-screen premium phone.

According to industry sources on Wednesday, Samsung has been working with own and outside engineers and experts since the first reports of explosion in October to identify what caused overheating and made some of the devices catch fire with hopes to reach a conclusion within the year.

Its investigation has involved state-run Korean Agency for Technology and Standards (KATS), Korea Testing Laboratory (KTL), the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), U.S. safety consulting and certification company UL.

The government-led probe also ran into a setback as different test results came out of devices from the same production line. From the slow progress so far, Samsung Electronics won’t be able to wrap up the ordeal soon, the sources said.

Identifying the cause of the defect is pivotal to gain consumer confidence in the next Samsung Electronics flagship phone. Regardless of awing new features, few would be tempted to buy the new phone with safety questions.

Samsung Electronics had hoped to unpack Galaxy S8 series at the 2017 Mobile World Congress in February with intelligent personal assistant feature and extended smart connections.

At 14:31 p.m., shares of Samsung Electronics rose 0.9 percent or 16,000 won to 1,761,000 won in Seoul trading Thursday.
