Siemens teams up with Hyundai Wia to build the first fully automated plant in Korea

Siemens AG, Germany-based engineering behemoth, confirmed that it was building a high-tech smart plant in Ansan in Gyeonggi Province by 2018 with the help of South Korea’s automotive parts maker Hyundai Wia Corp.

The company plans to carry out campaign to expand smart plants in Korea together with Korean and foreign players, said Siemens Korea.

On top of Hyundai Wia, Siemens has organized a consortium with Germany’s leading pneumatic and mechanical components manufacturer Festo AG, industrial robot maker KUKA AG, Eplan, Rittal and others. Recently, the consortium was selected as the project operator by Korea Smart Factory Foundation (KOSF) to build the smart plant.

Under the consortium, companies plan to use the smart plant that employs the Internet of Things (IoT) and big data system as a test bed to raise the Korean Inc.’s efficiency and productivity through automated manufacturing.

A cutting-edge integrated processing line which incorporates smart machinery, robots and processing equipment will be installed in the smart plant to be built in Ansan, an official of Siemens said.

Siemens also plans to transfer its latest technology to Korea and provide technology consultation for smart process platform.
