South Korea’s top manufacturer Samsung Electronics has redeemed 90 percent of Galaxy Note7 phones sold to 3.06 million around the world in August and September after it carried out expensive recall program upon its first batch of shipment as well as replacement phones caught fire that led to discontinuation of the premium phone.

The company said on Sunday that 90 percent of customers in North America and Europe have returned their phones. The return ratio was smaller at 80 percent in Korea.

Samsung activated a software update in October that limits the phone’s ability to charge beyond 60 percent in order to prevent the phones catching fire and encouraged its users to return their phones. Yet there still remain those who stubbornly want to stick to their phones regardless of the safety risk.

The tech giant is planning on additional software update to achieve full recall in cooperation with local authorities and mobile carriers. It plans to moderate the battery charge limiting software to prevent charging beyond 30 percent in Europe or make battery charging dysfunctional in the United States to force customers to return their phones. In New Zealand, mobile carriers stopped servicing the phone.

The disgraceful ban on Samsung Note7 phone for fliers is also being removed by aviation authority as it has become unnecessary.
