Job seekers are waiting for their turn to apply for unemployment benefits.

Job seekers are waiting for their turn to apply for unemployment benefits.

South Korea’s employed number hit a six-year low in November as massive layoffs at troubled shipyards, shippers, and related industries brought more chill to the job market in lengthy slow-moving economy.

According to November labor data released by the Ministry of Employment and Labor on Monday, the number of the employed stood at 12.69 million in November, up 283,000, or 2.3 percent, from the same month last year, the slowest gain since September 2010 when the country was still reeling from the global 2008-2009 financial crisis.

Sluggishness in the manufacturing sector affected the labor market. Just 5,000 jobs were added in the sector. The shipbuilding industry under restructuring shed 28,000. The electronics and computer communications equipment sector that accounts for 14.5 percent of manufacturing jobs also lost 13,000.

Factories to make smartphones and displays have moved to overseas in order to lower production cost to stay competitive against cheaper Chinese products, translating into fewer job opportunities at home, said a ministry official.

New applicants for unemployment benefits increased 5,000, or 7.2 percent, to 72,000 from the same month last year. Unemployment subsidy applicants totaled 331,000 taking home 354.2 billion won, up 3.9 percent and 13.6 percent, respectively, on year.
