Samsung Electronics Co. plans to ramp up its budget television (TV) output and marketing to redeem its presence in the Chinese market dominated by local players.

The electronics giant plans to cut the number of light-emitting diodes (LEDs) used as backlights for liquid crystal display (LCD) TVs to bring down the market price.

Its technology would also make the LCD TV about 30 percent thinner than existing TVs.

The firm plans to roll out 65-inch ultra-high definition (UHD) TVs with factory price of less than 1 million won ($854.92) by slashing the number of LEDs, according to an industry official.

Samsung Electronics remains an unrivaled global leader in the TV market in revenue value despite its decreasing sales volume. But it won’t be able to keep up its leadership if it only clings to the premium market.

Chinese names take up more than 84 percent of TV sales in China. Share of Japanese brands has dipped to 4.4 percent this year from 9.0 percent in 2014. Taiwan’s share has risen to 4.4 percent this year - similar to Korea’s - from 2.1 percent in 2014.
