South Korea’s largest automaker Hyundai Motor Co. contends it can make headway in the electric vehicle market and catch up with industry leaders Tesla Motors Inc. and General Motors Co. that will have affordable long-range EVs on the road next year.

It claims its EV prototype outperforms existing players of 200-mile run per single charge and can fully recharge in less than 10 hours.

A senior executive of Hyundai Motor declining to be named said the carmaker aims to roll out its version of mass-market all-electric model that can run up to 400 kilometers (248.5 miles) and be recharged in less than ten hours in 2020. An earlier model to be released in 2018 will have a range of 320 km (199 miles) on a faster charge. It would be trailing Chevy Bolt with single-charge range of 238 miles and Tesla Model 3 sporting 215 miles on the road since 2017.

Driving range and battery charging time are crucial factors for all-electric cars. A longer range will demand longer charging. Faster charging would come at the cost of the driving range.

The trick for EV competitors is to come up with the technology to make a car last long on the road at quicker charging. Hyundai Motor’s all-electric sedan IONIQ launched in June can go as far as 191 kilometers (119 miles) per charge, still far behind global competition.

A local driver would be persuaded to purchase an EV when it can run at least from Seoul to Busan covering a distance of 249 miles on a single charge.

The EV starters with a range of more than 200 miles, however, take long to be fully recharged because of their bigger battery storage. BYD’s e6 takes more than 11 hours to be fully powered and so does Tesla Model S 90D.
