Penalties fliers have to pay for cancelling tickets for international flights booked through Korean travel agencies would be significantly lowered, according to new guideline issued by the Fair Trade Commission.

Under the new action to fix excessive penalties charged by travel agencies, consumers cancelling air tickets would not have to pay beyond 10,000 won ($8.63). They currently had to pay penalty of 30,000 won to travel agencies on top of cancellation fees to airliners.

The order was handed out to ticket agencies Hana Tour, Mode tour Network, Interpark, Online Tour, Yellow Balloon, Tourbaksa, Verygoodtour, Redcap Tour, Tour 2000, Lotte JTB and Hanjin Tour - that would have to comply with the new pricing rule from next year.

The FTC plans to review penalties foreign airliners charge on flights leaving Korea to make necessary changes if it discovers fees to be excessive.
