South Korea’s largest automaker Hyundai Motor Co.’s IONIQ hybrid has topped fuel efficiency rating in the United States, elbowing out long-time winner Toyota Prius.

Hyundai Motor said Tuesday that its 2017 IONIQ Blue hybrid received an EPA

(Environmental Protection Agency) fuel efficiency rating of 58 miles per gallon (MPG) in combined city and highway driving, outperforming the previous champion, Toyota Motor Corp.’s 2016 Prius Eco, by two mpg. The hybrid’s city and highway ratings read 57 and 59 mpg, respectively.

The Korea hybrid achieved fuel recognition although it is a new contestant compared with Prius that has maintained the reputation as the most fuel-efficient car since the 1990s, the Korean carmaker said.

The IONIQ hybrid has previously beaten the fourth-generation Prius since it was introduced at home in January, with combined fuel efficiency of 22.4 kilometers per

liter. That compares to the Prius with mileage of 21.9 kilometers per liter.

Moreover, Hyundai’s hybrid promises more powerful driving experience than the Prius. German car magazine Autobild found in October that Hyundai’s IONIQ hybrid accelerated from 0 to 100 kilometers per hour in 10.4 seconds while the Prius did it in 10.8 seconds.
