New E-Class

Mercedes-Benz sold more than 50,000 units in Korea in the first 11 months this year, setting a new sales milestone for a foreign brand in Korea.

According to Korea Automobile Importers and Distribution Association Tuesday, Mercedez Benz Korea Ltd. sold as many as 50,718 cars in the January - November period, helped by its new E-Class and sport utility vehicle (SUV) models. E-Class sedans were ranked the first, fourth and fifth on the best-seller chart last month. Bolstered sales of SUV segment - which increased from 10 percent to 16 percent - also contributed to its stellar performance. The German automaker will extend its SUV lineup to seven models next year with introduction of the GLC Coupe in Korea next year.

Overall sales of import cars last month, on the other hand, dipped 15.8 percent to 19,361 units, from a year ago, due to sales ban on Volkswagen cars in Korea.

The German automaker outsold local rival BMW by more than 8,000 units so far this year, and would be the top-seller for the full-year in Korea. BMW, which has lost its top place in the Korean market that it kept for the last seven years to Mercedez hopes to recoup through the new 5 series released in the first half next year.

Audi Volkswagen Korea Ltd. barely sold any car last month because of sales ban and license cancellation for violating emission and certification rules.

The company was able to sell just two of its models - 2.0-liter TSI and Touareg 3.0-liter TDI until October, but they too ran out of stock.

Audi sold 463 cars in November but saw its sales plunge 87.8 percent from a year earlier. Audi Volkswagen Korea is mulling application for re-certification for banned models after the government approves its recall policy.
